Michigan - The Great State! (and we have Lakes too!)

Dear MCC,

What makes Michigan THE greatest state in the Union?  Why do you live and work here?  What would you recommend to others about our mitten shaped slice of heaven?

A few weeks ago, I was talking to an old friend of mine from England.  I said, "I live in the Great Lakes State...  No!  I live in THE GREAT STATE, and we have lakes too!"  Being involved in marketing for so long, I thought that that maybe a great way to market our Great State!

Next month will be my 20th anniversary of moving to this area of Michigan.  I lived in Canton the first 6 years and Plymouth ever since.  I love my community, my region within Michigan, my State (GREAT STATE that is!!), and my Country.

I have PLENTY of reasons why I know Michigan is THE GREAT STATE!  (Number one reason is:  I live here! Cool )  Please share your answers to any/all of my questions above!

All the best,

David.

My top 5 in no particular order:

Our state motto is: If you seek a nicer peninsula, look around you

North of Bay City is absolutely gorgeous

Our state was involved in creating the greatest revolution on the planet (automobile)

I can walk 300 yards in any direciton from my front door and have my toes in the lake

We have a good balance of affluence, poverty and everything in between and we make it all work!

There are great people here (even if one of them can't count to 5)

Good topic. I've noticed that many native Michiganders are more patrotic to our state than we are the entire country. Moreso than Texans, even. I'm one of them.

The first thing that comes to mind when reading your question is SEASONS. Right now, autumn, is my favorite season of them all. I was driving around today and thinking about how beautiful my state is and how much I love it. I lived in Florida for a while, and as beautiful as it was, it got very tiring very fast. Christmas wasn't the same without snow, and as much as I thought I hated our winters growing up I grew to miss it.

I'm having a hard time finding a full-time job here since graduating U of M in 2007, and I could be like all the rest and find employment elsewhere, but my stubbornness and my love for my home state are making me stay here and plug away. Yes, our economy sucks. Yes, we have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. But I shouldn't have to leave my home that I love just to find a job. I want to stay here, and I'm doing everything I can to keep it that way.
