What should I ask Terry Bean?

I'm new to MCC and although I don't reside in the Detroit area, I think this is a fantastic resource! A brief introduction -- My name is Peter Clayton and I'm the producer/host of a career advocacy radio show (podcast) called Total Picture Radio. One of your members, and a listener of my show, suggested I interview Terry Bean. After spending some time on this web site I thought Cleo was right! (Hat-tip to Cleo Parker for introducing me to MCC)...

So, I wanted to reach out to the members of this group and ask for  your suggestions.. I'm recording the interview with Terry Tuesday AM...

What should I ask Terry?

What is special about MCC?

How has MCC helped you?
If you've attended any of the MCC events, please share your stories.
Have you made new friends through the MCC group?
Have you found a new job, or attracted new business though MCC?
Do you think the Govt should bail out the "Big 3?"
People outside of the Detroit area hear so much negative information about "the rust belt" the tremendous unemployment, crime, etc. What's great about living in Detroit? Why do you stay?

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I'll let you know when the interview with Terry goes live... check out www.totalpicture.com for more information.

Best regards,
Peter Clayton

I'd ask Terry about his goal of ridding us of the phrase "six degrees of separation" and his thoughts on how we are all connected.

Ask Terry about his vision of Network 3.0 and how you are known.

MCC is special because the members make it special.  "Buikd it & they will come" has occurred.

I remain in the Detroit area because the grass really isn't all that much greener elsewhere.  Every metro area has its own problems and perks.

Metro Detroit has led the world in many ways over the last centuries, from the invention of the assembly line to Motown and Madonna, and we're not about to stop now.

If the media (including the locals) focused on the spirit of metro Detroit's people, including folks like Terry Bean and the entire MCC membership, the news would be far brighter.

Ask him about the philosophy of "coop-etiton."

I've participated in MCC for more than a year now, and yes, I have gained new friends and new business as a result. But more important to me is that MCC gives me an open and free forum to gain insight into myself, learn and practice networking skills, and give back to the community through the group's philanthropic efforts. MCC is a business forum on the surface, but a "life forum" that is changing the fortunes and spirits of its members.

Thank You, Peter, for shining the light on one of Detroit's very best.

Make your day magnificent!

Linda

What is special about MCC?

Hi Peter - I'm glad you asked.  MCC is special because it's a collection of smart, connected people who are here for a common goal and committed to helping each other.  Unselfish in their business and charity outreach.

How has MCC helped you?

MCC has connected me to business prospects, strong network contacts, and personal friends.

If you've attended any of the MCC events, please share your stories.

Have you made new friends through the MCC group?

Absolutely.

Have you found a new job, or attracted new business though MCC?

Not only attracted new business, but the folks at MCC have connected me to speaking opportunities that have impacted our business in immeasurable ways.  Thanks!

Do you think the Govt should bail out the "Big 3?"

I'm banned from talking politics, religion or unions on this board...

People outside of the Detroit area hear so much negative information about "the rust belt" the tremendous unemployment, crime, etc. What's great about living in Detroit? Why do you stay?

I love the phrase, "strongest in the broken places"... I think that really sums it up.  Often our biggest opportunities come when our character is tested the most.  That's where Detroit sits today.  Blue collar, Midwestern values differentiate our people and our character.  Detroit?  Try it out.  Lots of technology and brainpower here and opportunity.

And, in this economy, a tremendous opportunity to buy on sale...

Terry and crew have had such an impact.

I'd ask....

  • In this volatile economy and changing market demand  - What is  the mistake that most businesses are doing and what do you think business should do to address it ?

  • Where do you see style & trend of marketing and networking going in the next 3 to 5 years ?

  • As a networking specialist - How would you differentiate between character ethics and personality ethics and which is the effective one for business success ?

  • Scenario: Tough sales numbers, tight budget for marketing, less man power:
With these limited resource (money, time & man power) - what is the most effective methods common to most business domain to increase profit/success ? (This Q can be address business domain specific, but we can address the common area applicable to most business)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just out of my personal curiosity - while the above are all serious questions, here is a fun question (similar to your Big 3 Q)

  • If Terry Bean is the key authority to build a solution to the credit crunch that is biting almost all the businesses , what would be his approach to solve this?

There you go... my contribution of questions and I know Terry is going to have effective and fun answers.

Ask him about being a Hurgle :-)

No, seriously, Terry's an interesting guy. I think the power of positive thinking/attraction is one of the cornerstones of Terry's "ethos," if you will.

It's a really simple and perhaps obvious question, but "Why did you start MCC?  And why did you structure it as you did?"

While MCC is unique, in that it is both online and in person, what keeps me here is the quality of the people I meet and have become friends with.  I have not only gotten business from MCC, I have made some great referral partner relationships here.  And I love that I have many opportunities throughout the year to give back to my community.

And what keeps me in Detroit is the people!  The people I meet (many of them through MCC) have such a drive and determination and vision for a better future for both themselves and our community.  It's easy to be great when the going is good.  The true test of someone is how they are when the going isn't good - and it hasn't been good here for awhile.  People I meet here are tough, are resilient, and focused and are positive - some of the best people around anywhere.

Peter, you have a great podcast.  I'm still adjusting to not spending as much time in my car as I use to, so I don't listen as much as I should although I still enjoy your podcasts when I can!

A few questions that peak my curiousity are:

1.  What book are you reading right now?

2.  Who do you consider to be your mentors and why?  What made you decide to learn from those individuals?

3.  What are your top five songs on your Ipod? (just for fun)

What should I ask Terry?

Ask what his vision is for MCC (locally and beyond) over the next 24 months.

What is special about MCC?

That it costs nothing to join. Everyone who wants to participate, can. In this economy, it's more important than ever to try and remove financial barriers to opportunity. MCC provides tremendous value at the "free" level and only charges a membership fee for those who are ready to take their networking to the next level.

How has MCC helped you?

Many ways. The most recent being that our Marketing Manager came to us through MCC and the networking community. She has been a strong player from day one and is helping to revolutionize the company. And we wouldn't have even met her if not for MCC.

If you've attended any of the MCC events, please share your stories.

At least one new contact made at every event. Some of these have already turned into quite large sales for Biznet.

Do you think the Govt should bail out the "Big 3?"

Probably. At the very least, the Govt should explain to the people why the Detroit 3 are being treated so differently from the banks. The former get endless grilling, while the latter has Treasury and Fed figuring out their strategies for them.

People outside of the Detroit area hear so much negative information about "the rust belt" the tremendous unemployment, crime, etc. What's great about living in Detroit? Why do you stay?

Detroit has a rich history that attracts me to the area, and I believe we're headed back to those glory days. The spirit of the people who built it is still here. It's just a matter of time. Also, the automotive industry has resulted in a huge skilled tech labor pool (4th largest in the US?). With Automation Alley and Ann Arbor helping to focus that talent, we are poised for great things in the coming economy. This talent applied to emerging industries (biotech, alternative energy, etc.), will provide new opportunities for market leadership.

Thank goodness Peter asked the question. Seems like there is a lot of good ones. I am hopeful he didn't see Henry's last one ;-)

I will spend some time over the coming holiday and make sure all of these get answered, regardless of what Peter asks.

I shall also make you all aware as to when the interview will run.

Thank you for taking the time to answer, sharing your insights and most importantly, being a part of our community.

Be Connected-

Terry Bean

Ask Terry about why he created a forum like MCC instead of following the more rigid patterns of other networking groups.

Have him expand on his concept of "The Ask"

My question to Terry is simple.

- What does MCC bring to you?

If you've attended any of the MCC events, please share your stories.

I'm a newbie, yep! Last week was my first knowledge and attendance to a meeting of MCC.

After meeting with Linda AngĂ©r, The Write Concept, for the first time, she enthusiastically asked me to attend this networking lunch for MCC. I had no clue of who they were or what type of networking group this is.

I've been in alot of networking groups and organizations over the years and the welcoming energy and openly asking me how they could help ME filled me with gratitude. The giving attitude is well represented in this group.

Charlie Wollborg, Curve Detroit, sat with Linda and myself for lunch and was gracious and openly shared with me connections I would not have found. Terry came up afterward and warmly welcomed me and asked how I had enjoyed the MCC experience. Others in the group were open and interesting.

I haven't even begun to search out the online connections. Kudos to the uplifting, encouraging spirit of MCC! Hopefully MCC will let the members know how we can connect to the interview.

Thanks for bringing a well deserved spotlight to the Metro Connect Community!

I'd ask Terry why he doesn't charge for participating in this network?

He's surrounded by talented people who pour an awful lot into feeding the community on Motor City Connect . . . they need to get paid and they are worth it!

What's his plan for growing this community?

I hope I am not to late Peter,

Terry could answer all of these questions well. One of the things I love about Terry is his ability to rant about things that he is passionate about.

Ask Terry about his Passion for people, Passion for giving, Passion for helping, Passion for Detroit. Then just sit back, grab a twix, because your gonna be there for a while.

Good Luck
