The Office Cubicle turns 40..born in Ann Arbor in 1968

It's original designer, Bob Propst, never intended for the "cublice" to become the oft-maligned icon of Dilbert that it has become. His original intentions were much loftier. Still, for the good or the bad, its an interesting piece of Ann Arbor history that not everyone may know about.

See it in this week's issue of Ann Arbor Business Review magazine:

Isn't it funny how everything that's old is new again?

Stand-up working environments are starting to become "vogue" in some quarters - and the "new" cubicle designs I see look just like the original design picture in the article.  And I swear I saw a few of those furniture pieces (like the little table) at Ikea the last time I went ;-)

Every time I go to an office that's row after row of stereotypical box cubicles I cringe and am thankful we do an open floorplan - it's OK to move or roll your desk if that's what works for the project.

Jeremy,

It sounds like you guys are set up well for today's style of work. Yes, it is funny how the old is new again and how these things cycle back around. I'm not sure exactly what is the next thing in office environments but it had better be very accomodating to what's next in technology. That will be key.
