I'm working on a new project and would love some different perspectives...Imagine that a friend of yours is moving to Michigan for one year and wants to make the most out of their time here.  What are five things you would advise him/her to see or do to have a quintessential Michigan experience?

I'll be brief:

  1. Mackinaw Island

  2. Frankenmuth

  3. color tour Up North in the fall (3.5: while you're there, eat a pastie)

  4. Detroit Symphony Orchestra

  5. walk across the Mackinaw Bridge on Memorial Day

The cynical part of me wants to say "lose your job" but I'm trying to bite my tongue.

... oops.

1.  Seney National Wildlife Refuge, near Seney in the UP

2.  Pictured Rocks at Munising

3.  Winery tours on the Old Mission Penninsula and the Leelanua Penninsula.

4.  Microbreweries and brewpubs everywhere.

5.  Dozens of classic downtowns

-- and ---

(Can't stop at 5)

6.  The DIA

7.  The Henry Ford

Whoops, I meant walk the Big Mac on Memorial Day.

I always get those two days mixed up. (Thanks, Jeff, for the head's up.)

1. Mackinac Island and Mackinaw Bridge (for some reason they are spelled differently (someone please explain))

2. Sleeping Bear Dunes

3. Tahquamenon Falls in fall

4. Ice Skating at Campus Martius

5. Dinner in the Garden at Legg's Inn (Cross Village) during sunset after the drive in the Tunnel of Trees

Other: Tip-up-Town (Winter Festival)(Houghton Lake),  Mystery Spot (since your up there), Bronners & Frankenmuth, Tony's Restaurant (Birch Run), Dinner at Roma Cafe, Eastern Market Flower Sale in Spring, Cross in the Woods,  Downtown Rochester Christmas Lights, Hines Drive Christmas Lights

What a fun question!!!

1. Mackinac Island (tandom biking around the island)

2. Detroit Red Wings Hockey Game & Dinner atop the Renn Cen

3. Star Deli (Southfield Deli on 12/Telegraph)

4. October drive to experience the fall colors

5. Tahquamenon Falls

Here is an opportunity to get a free travel guide that lists all of the great things to do it Michigan. Enjoy.

1.  A drive along the water from New Baltimore up to Lexington. So many nice little towns!

2.  Saugatuck (south of Holland) anytime of the year.  Go to B&B for the weekend, park the car and walk everywhere.  Very artsy and relaxing.

3.  Holland Tulip Festival

4.  Explore the historic neighborhoods of Detroit - Palmer Woods, Boston-Edison, Indian Village, Sherwood Forest, etc.

5.  Cranbrook & Meadowbrook.

1.  The Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival, you will understand the big heart of small town Michigan quickly

2.  Any professional Detroit sporting event.  My preference is the Tigers but there is nothing like experiencing the BEST sports town in America!

3.  Touring the Sleeping Bear Dunes, complete with lunch at the end of the Platte River and dinner at the Manitou.  Actually, make that a weekend!

4.  Any weekend festival at Hart Plaza in Detroit.  Again, I like Movement and the Jazz Fest but Hart Plaza is always fun.

5.  Katrina's right, you have to go to Tahquamenon Falls and I would add a quick trip to the brew pub inside the state park.

6.  Dinner at Seldom Blues with a window seat.  Even better if you can time it with the fireworks.

7.  I love the idea of the fall color tour, but try combining it with checking out some of the lighthouses along Lake Michigan.  You can make the drive from Ludington to the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula in a weekend and see some incredible scenary!

Honorable mentions:

-Meadowbrook Hall

-Museum tours of the DIA, the Historical Museum, Motown, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Techno Music Museum.  Detroit has contributed a great deal to the cultural fiber of this country!

-Lafayette Coney

-Canoeing anywhere

PS, I don't like rules much!

From a less cultured perspective:

U of M vs. MSU Tailgate

Weekend @ Treetops Sylvan Resort, Gaylord, MI (Golf Resort)

Concert at DTE Energy Music Theater

Opening Day-Detroit Tiger's

Cheeseburger Tasting-Miller's (Dearborn), Nemo's (Detroit), Redcoat Tavern (Royal Oak)

Woodward Dream Cruise (Just on Saturday....not the entire 4 month build-up!!!)

I'm going to build on Kelly's perspective. Some of the best things about Michigan aren't picturesque (or odd -- Frankenmuth -- sorry) tourist destinations, they are the people and experiences of the Midwest.

1. We love football here, so UM vs. MSU or OSU would be amazing to see (Go Blue).

2. Have a bite to eat in any number of our diverse downtowns. I can eat Ethiopian, sushi, indian, vietnamese, italian, mexican, etc. all within two miles of my house.

3. Enjoy a night out at the bar/pub without having to worry about how fashionable your outfit is or whether you have enough cash to pay exorbitant cover. Michigan is full of plenty of local breweries and bars that are unpretentious and offer affordable drinks. It's great to drink a local brew while sitting on a barstool in your favorite pair of jeans...

4. Play beach volleyball with newly made friends on any one of Lake Michigan's wonderful sandy beaches.

5. Music, music, music. From jazz and blues festivals to the Mega 80s at The Magic Bag to an emerging opening act at The Lager House, the Detroit area has a truly amazing music scene.

Wow,

There really are a lot of things to do in Michigan,

Here is my list (I put the links in for you)

Thought of one more that I don't think has been mentioned:

North American International Auto Show

Fun for consenting adults…

Burt's Warehouse, Eastern Market. You don't have to sing Karaoke to
enjoy the many talented Detroiter's who make this place a rockin' good time on
a cold winter afternoon in Motown.

Oktober Fest at the Dakota
Inn. Roll out the barrel and hand me that chicken hat its time to drink, dance
and cluck.

The Dirty Show. Just don’t
tell mom.

Menjo’s. Definitely don’t
tell mom.

Midnight Mass in Hamtramck
after a night at the pub with friends.

Pit stop at White Castle on your way home from the pub with friends.

Try to get a cab to pick you up at a decent time after a night at the pub
with friends.

Safe for the whole family…

Any summer evening in
downtown Royal Oak

Opa! in Greektown. I don’t
think you are allowed to leave the state until you have eaten the flaming cheese.

Pierogies from the
Ukrainian Church in Hamtramck.

Did someone say Fat
Tuesday? Head back to Hamtramck for Paczki. Its just not right to get them
anywhere else.

Definitely
Tahquamenon Falls during the peak of fall in the U.P.

Scratch
four off your list at the same time with a Pastie stop in St. Ignace and fudge
from Mackinaw City.

Snowmobiling, boating,
4-wheeling, hiking, biking, swimming, hunting, fishing anywhere on or near
Drummond Island. While you are there stop by the Island Bakery and sample one
of Hal’s homemade Eclairs and bring one back for me. Thx.
