Does anyone else get SHY at large networking events?

I am just wondering. I can post up a storm here, chat at Tweet Ups but that is ONLY becuase I happened to know some of the people there. If I go to a room with NOT a single person I know I get intimidated.
To further your career you need to surround yourself with people that you can learn from. I get that because I am starting at the very bottom but at the same time. I would like to be able to go up to one stranger and just start talking.
I guess I am NOT a big fan of WHAT DO YOU DO and the ASK question. I am intimidated by it.
How do you curb this fear? How do you break the ice I guess you could say?

Teresa,
Could you email me the information on BRAG. That actually sounds interesting! I have gone to quite a few networking events and I am still shy. I didn't really feel much like being networky (is that a word) at the Wealth seminar through the Shrine Career Network but I still did a thank you and got a card.
Where is BRAG located and what does that stand for? Anything?
Jamie
Jaime,
BRAG stands for Business Resource Alliance Group and is a program of the Sterling Heights Utica Shelby Chamber or Commerce. BRAG groups meet weekly to develop relationships for the purpose of referal marketing. Each member has exclusivity within their business category. Requirements for membership are membership in the chamber and a $50 BRAG membership fee which covers the training and materials.
My group meets Thursday mornings at Villa Bella, located on 19 Mile just east of Hayes. We meet from 8am-9:15. Coincidentally, we are having a guest day this week, although guests are always welcome. Please join us to see if it might be right for your networking objectives.
Feel free to call me at 248-709-9008 and I'll be happy to address any other questions you have.
Teresa
