What doesn't kill you...

I know everyone has probably heard the saying "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger".

I thought about that saying this week when I told a colleague that building a business is without a doubt a character building activity.  Can you relate?

Resilience is the trait I discovered inside me.  I know it has always been there but sometimes it takes going outside of your comfort zone to discover these talents.

What about you?  What have you discovered about yourself in the process of building your business?  Has it been Patience, Creativity, Faith...?

Building my business has revealed things about myself that I NEVER thought I'd come to see.  It's shown me the best in myself, and the worst.  It's shown me what I can count on myself for, and what I need support with.  What it is about me that works, and what doesn't work.  It's been a really humbling exercise in living!

I've discovered that I'm good with people, and I really like them.  (I know, I know - sounds crazy, but there it is...)  That the skills I have really are transferrable.  That my greatest skill is listening, and my greatest strength is where I listen from.  I've discovered the power of acting NOW, rather than doing what I call "latering".  I trust myself and what I have to offer in a way that I didn't before.  I've found the absolute necessity of walking my talk.  I've discovered the reality in many of the things I've said for years about how to honorably conduct oneself.

I've also found out that I'm really lazy!  And that owning my own business requires a capacity for self-generation that working for or with others doesn't.  I've also discovered that it can be lonely - and that the friends and business colleagues that I have are beyond value.  I am continuously struck by the power of people supporting each other.    I have found that I am the biggest limitation on my success.

And in my business, I've also got something that I will change and grow myself for, in ways that I wouldn't do for "just me".  It's an amazing, always unexpected journey!
