Earth Day is Aprill 22nd. With so many different ways to make an impact, I think it would be cool if we channeled our energy and had a shared focus.
What would you like to do?
Set a time where we all turn off power?
Send some e-mails reminding others that it is Earth Day?
Not buy gas that day?
What thoughts do you have?

It's my son's birthday, so I'm pretty sure I need electricity. But we could not buy gas, clean up a park, a school yard, plant a tree (even in honor of someone that's no longer with us). Let's think about less bottled water and more Brita pitchers (no I'm not getting a kick back from Brita. But that's a lot of plastic!!!
Happy Birthday Chase and Happy Birthday Mother Earth!
Terry, thanks for bringing up Earth Day. Great idea to bring a little attention to it!
Earth Day is a great time to make a new start at leading a green life, not just celebrating a green day. Here are some ideas to start making a long-term difference:
1) Recycle as much as you can and buy things made out of recycled material. South Oakland County cities (like my town of Berkley) get money back on recyclables but have to pay to have trash hauled away. Recycling makes great economic sense! Also, remember to buy things out of recycled materials to create a market for the recyclables.
2) Walk, ride your bike or carpool more often. When it's not snowing (like today), my husband and I run our local errands by bike or foot. We've got baskets and bags attached to the bikes that allow us to carry things around. It allows us to meet more of our neighbors and burn off extra calories from the ice cream place we like to stop at along the way.
3) Support mass transit by lobbying your legislator or joining an organization like Transportation Riders United (TRU) who are making a huge impact on this front. Mass transit not only helps reduce pollution, it also gives a great economic boost. www.detroittransit.org
4) Stop buying bottled water (and Brita) -- both use plastic and the Detroit area has some of the best tap water around. I invested in a SIGG water bottle and just refill it every morning. It saves me a ton of money.
5) Reduce and reuse. The more new stuff we get whether it's as small as a water bottle or as big as a couch means there was waste in producing it and that something else is likely going in the landfill. Buy only what you need, and try to buy things that can be reused. Try switching out regular plates for your paper plates and consider buying a great vintage piece off Ebay instead of new one. I just got some great original Eames chairs for my dining room for cheap!
Make Earth Day your kickoff day to a new beginning. People often think these things sound difficult; but, after a few weeks of doing things this way, it totally becomes second nature!
