Working with the co-opetition

I was in a sales training last week and the trainer said its a great idea to try to collaborate with you customers. Just remember that they are the enemy!
I highly disagree with that, yet I know that attitude is pervasive, especially when it comes to networking. So, I would like to hear your stories about how you cooperated with your competition (cooperation+competition=co-opetition according to Mr. Bean). How did it work for you? Why was it successful? Would you do it again?

Mr. Bean actually refers to it as comperation cuz he read the word Co-opetition elsewhere and can't claim it as his own.
I think this comes to play often especially in the areas of marketing and technology. So many companies get into these spaces because they do one thing really well. But in order to grow their business they take on more and more projects. As that line card continues to expand, their level of expertise in each new endeavor decreases. That is when comperation is truly needed.
Not only does it allow for a better solution for your customer, it may just add to your business development efforts. When you find you can provide good work to your competitors, they may just become your best partners.
I collaborated with competition, (that's what I think you meant vs. "customers") in the youth market, with two other organizations. We brain stormed and supported each other. We met often in CA when I lived there. Sicne that time, each of us have published books, one was on Oprah three times and the one on Oprah is going to be on my board of advisors. They are only the enemy if they don't see the opportunity in joint support of the bigger picture.
