Would like to hear more about your experience and successes with Grant Writing. How did you find your funding source? How long was the process? Did you get any awarded grants?

Hi Jennifer -
I am currently involved as a grant writer for a $90 million building project...
There are many online databases for researching funding sources - they vary based on the type of project you are trying to fund. The Ford Foundation, for example, limits their funding to international projects in underdeveloped nations, with a specific part of the Foundation dedicated to the NYC area surrounding their headquarters. (Sadly, the Ford Foundation has pretty much abandoned Michigan, where it originated). There are Government Grants, Foundation Grants, and Corporate Grants, all fairly specific in what the fund. The Kresge Foundation does "Challenge Grants" - where an org is awarded monies based on what they are able to raise locally in response to the "challenge."
If you can tell me the type of project you are looking to fund, I may be able to direct you to some agencies.
Process time - well, that depends on how organized the non-profit seeking the funds may be (is the required information readily available, or are you running all over the place trying to piece it together?) how clear they are in their goals and objectives, and their overall credibility.
It can take a few weeks, or several months to write an effective grant proposal - it all depends on what you are up to, and the guidelines of the funders you are approaching. As for response time, that varies a lot, too. I know of one woman seeking a gov't grant who has been "in the process" for the better part of two years now - it's all tied up in bureaucratic red tape and political dancing, made worse by the fact that this is an election year.
Statistics show there was over $8 BILLION available in grants in 2006 - and some of it was never awarded. Meanwhile, funding sources receive thousands of grant proposals every year, but most approve only a small percentage. Often the reason for rejection is that the organization's projects are not in line with the funding source's guidelines (researching funding agencies is a major and critical part of a grant writer's job), or the proposal writing was not compelling.
I'd be happy to discuss this with you further - give me a call. 248-276-2429, or email me directly:

I'm very interested in this subject myself as I have an ongoing arts project that could use alignment from a number of sources that I could identify with someone having experience. Thank you Jennifer for bringing a few sources on the site forward and I will be contacting soon.
