The National Gardening Association, with the support of Gardener's
Supply Company, offers the 2008 Healthy Sprouts Award. This award is
designed to encourage the growth of health-focused youth gardens by
recognizing outstanding programs throughout the U.S. To be eligible,
schools or organizations must plan to garden in 2009 with at least
fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18.
Twenty schools or
organizations will be selected to receive gift certificates to purchase
gardening materials, NGA's "Eat a Rainbow" kit of taste education and
nutrition lessons, 25 packets of seeds, and a literature package from
NGA. Winners are selected based on the demonstrated relationship
between the garden program and nutrition and hunger issues in the U.S.
Applications must be submitted by October 15, 2008.

That seems like an excellent way to teach way to teach responsibility.

I agree, Duane - so if you are aware of any Non-Profits that work with kids (and might have gardening programs), send this post on to them.
