I need at least 100 people to volunteer 4 hours of their time
I need your help.
I've got a vision and I need to see it realized. I want to have a really cool costume party to celebrate the success of angel's night on the 3rd floor of the Blightbuster's building in the D.
Technically, that barely scratches the surface of what I want to do. BUT, if I can't get 100 people to do some work, I likely can't pull off the rest.
I want to throw the most successful fund-raising effort this city has ever seen. I want to simultaneously give money to five different charities and a chunk to the Detroit Public schools. I believe between YOU and the people WE know, we can make this happen with ease.
If properly executed, we would create enough positive energy in this area that we could literally change the Nation's and our own perceptions of ourselves. We would also generate enough money to impact a bunch of cool organizations including The Red Cross (Tis the season to start thinking about Red, Green and Warmth again or it will be on Nov. 1 anyway)
On to the +100 people to volunteer at least 4 hours of their time. I think if I can get 10 groups of 10 to go down to blightbusters for 4 hours at a crack (no pun intended) we could get the ball room ready. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention how stunning this old room was (It will be stunning again some day).
This work will need to take place over the next 5 weeks as I want to have the party on November 1st. I also want to raise a whole heck of a lot of money (I would tell you how much, but you would tell me I am nuts) by then too.
My favorite Kwame quotation: "John George is crazy. He believes in doing the impossible". I thank whatever you believe God to be for John George. He is an amazing man I am hopeful that some of you will help support him and his cause, blightbusters.

I am trying to scale my dream down to some semblance of reality based on the short period of time between right now and when I want this to happen. Reality bites.
Here's what will be needed at a bare minimum:
Some people that are good at filling holes (the safety inspector doesn't like them).
Folks that can install hand rails (even though it's only 2 stories, it's a long fall)
People that no how to paing. Good news, there really aren't any lines.
Cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning.
My thought is that over the next 5 weeks we run two 4 hour schedules per week. Maybe a 9-1 on Tuesday and a 1-5 on Thursday. I am sure we will throw in a Saturday or two as well.
This will be work, but if done properly, it should be a hell of a lot of fun too. As far as the party at the end of it all, we can either setup a little haunted house for the kiddies or go with my original costume party idea. I think both would be a blast.
After that great explanation, I am sure many, many more will be jumping on the bandwagon. Jump in. The water is fine!
Count me in for Saturdays after Oct 5th (I am out of town till then). I will be happy to contribute.

I think we will something small this year, and turn it into the half a million dollar fundraiser I foresee.

Sounds good. By clearer vision I just mean costume vs haunted house, fundraising aspect, date, time, cost...the usual suspects. I have no doubt that the bigger vision is crystal clear, even if we only accomplish version one this year. Please keep me posted on how I can help.

I'd love to help. No cleaning of chandeliers, though - my foot is just now getting better!
It would be even better if we could set up carpools down there - there's nothing quite so much fun as a bunch of MCC members driving together to contribute back to our community. Trust me - Linda Anger, Kathleen O'Connell and I did it when we helped destroy the crack house last May.
Terry, could you set up some Tuesdays, Thursdays and maybe a Saturday or two and post them on the MCC calendar? Those who are willing to be carpool drivers could let everyone know in the Comments section of the page. And people who want to go with a driver can "sign up" there, as well.

One thing I learned from Peak Potentials is that when when the WHY becomes so big the how doesn't matter. And obviously you have a Big Why.....
