I want to use my skills to help....
I consistently get asked by clients if I could take some of their furniture they no loner use or want. They think that I can restore and sell it in my "spare" time. The truth is, I have a couple pieces in my shop that I took a year ago specifically for that reason. Fortunately, I haven't had much spare time.
I've started suggesting to clients that they give their furniture to local charities. Usually when I see the client again, the unwanted furniture is still in their garage or basement.
I was looking for a charitable organization with which I can develop a program for furniture donations, whether the furniture itself goes to the needy or it's sold to benefit the needy. My thoughts were to offer discounts or gift cards to clients who made donations. I've tried contacting an organization about this for a few months now, but have not gotten a response. Maybe they don't think it's a good idea, but I thought I'd throw it out here and see what happens.
If anyone knows a director of a charitable organization that may fit this program, please let me know or let them know to contact me. I want to set up an official program that I would be able to promote on my website and via flyers at events I participate in.
I'm also open to hearing comments or suggestions about my little idea and what I can do to make it a succesful program.
Thanks!
Israel

Israel,
I am on the board of directors for the Furniture Bank of Southeast Michigan. As of last Tuesday I have over 800 families waiting for furniture. Please call me at 248-613-1911 and I will be happy to tell you more.

Lisa,
Thanks for making the connection for me!!! - I have a meeting at the Furniture Bank next week. It's incredible how I've been tryin to get something like this started for a long time and haven't been able to get very far - then I join Motor City Connect, and a couple of days later I'm able to make this sort of connection. Fantastic!
